A Journey of Transformation: Baylor Extended Learning's Medical Billing & Coding Bootcamp

May 6, 2025

In the heart of Texas, a dedicated educator found herself at a crossroads. After two decades of shaping young minds in Mesquite ISD, she yearned for a new challenge, a fresh start that would allow her to grow and adapt in an ever-changing world. This is the inspiring story of her journey through Baylor Extended Learning's Medical Billing & Coding Bootcamp.

A Leap of Faith
Clarissa Block, a Baylor alumna, had spent 20 years in education, starting as an eighth-grade English teacher and eventually becoming a district-level facilitator for Career and Technical Education (CTE) counselors. Despite her success, she felt a pull towards something different, something that would offer her the flexibility to work remotely and the opportunity for continuous growth.

Clarissa said, “In September, I received an email from Baylor Extended Learning announcing a new Medical Billing & Coding bootcamp with AAPC. I was intrigued but uncertain, so I began researching the field and attended an AAPC-hosted open house event. I was so encouraged by the recruiter and reassured by conversations with industry professionals, that I decided to take the plunge.”

The Bootcamp Experience
Starting in late September, the bootcamp was an intensive 30-week program designed to equip students with the skills needed for a career in medical billing and coding. The curriculum was rigorous, with live lectures on Tuesdays and practical application sessions on Thursdays. Each week, students took quizzes, chapter tests, and completed practical assignments, all of which required a passing grade of 70 or higher.

“Having no prior medical experience, I found the course goals challenging but attainable. The program is designed to support learners like me at every step, offering opportunities to retake tests and learn from mistakes, if needed,” commented Clarissa.

Networking and Certification
One of the standout features of the bootcamp for Clarissa was the inclusion of a ticket to the AAPC Healthcon, a premier event for medical coding professionals. This opportunity allowed Clarissa to network with industry experts, gain insights into the field, and even receive guidance on crafting a resume that would appeal to potential employers.
Her dedication paid off. She not only completed the billing portion of the bootcamp and passed the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) exam but also took the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam early and passed. To top it all off, Clarissa is the first student to complete Baylor’s new program.

Looking Ahead
With her new certifications in hand, our Clarissa is ready to embark on her new career. She has already resigned from her position in education and is actively seeking opportunities in the medical billing and coding field.

“The bootcamp has not only provided me with the technical skills needed for the job but also the confidence to pursue my dreams and take this next exciting step in my career journey,” said Clarissa.

Her story is a testament to the power of continual learning and the transformative impact of Baylor Extended Learning's Medical Billing & Coding Bootcamp. For those considering a career change or looking to enhance their skills, this program offers a comprehensive, supportive, and effective path to success.
